About this work
A figure seen from the chest up has a smooth, featureless oval where a face should be, its neck rising from a loosely gathered ivory blouse. Around the head sits an open, crown-like structure of thin golden rings, and three small brown-and-buff birds perch and hover on and around it against a flat black ground.
The blank face is painted in cool ivory-grey with soft, blended shading, contrasting with the warm gold and russet of the ring crown and the birds' feathers, which are handled with looser, feathery strokes. The absence of features and the birds circling an empty head give the picture a quiet, enigmatic stillness.
